Nadal and Fognini Still on Course for Semi-Final Meeting in Beijing

Howdy, folks. In the last couple of days, both Nadal and Fognini progressed in the bottom half and is still on course for what would be a mouth-watering semi-final. They won their respective matches against Pospisil and Goffin, 7-6(3), 6-4 and 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. I watched some of Nadal’s match and he is still a shadow of his former self. I’m not sure he will defeat Sock in his next match, but he certainly can.

The two have met once before at this year’s French Open where Sock won a set off Nadal which pretty means on the Beijing surface he definitely has a shot of beating Nadal. Sock’s problem is he has a shitty backhand which Nadal can easily exploit with his crosscourt forehand, but he also has a big serve and forehand which could make life difficult for the current Nadal. So I am looking forward to seeing what happens there.

The Fog, ladies and gentleman

For once I want Nadal to win because number one I want him to play Fognini, and number two if Fognini does not make semis I want Nadal to make the final. I also want Nadal to make a comeback. Right now it is a bit one-dimensional at the top with Federer being Djokovic’s only competition and he is not winning the matches that matter let’s be honest. Not that I’m complaining, but a better Nadal would just make things a little more interesting.

I’d love to see another Nadal vs Fogini meeting anyway which is developing into a nice little rivalry. Fognini’s win over Nadal in New York was just epic and he has now won three of the last four meetings with Nadal but trails the head-to-head 3-5. And with Nadal in his current form Fognini could easily defeat Nadal again which would be pretty hilarious. But Fognini still has to beat Cuevas as well so there are no guarantees.

  • Top Half

Today in the top half of the draw Djokovic was back in action and he allowed Zhang a full three games winning 6-2, 6-1. That was more or less what I expected. At least Djokovic was nice enough not to hand him the double breadstick like he did Bolleli. Zhang didn’t bagel his bro after all. Djokovic was impeccable again and it does seem very unlikely that anyone is going to stop him from winning a sixth title here.

He now plays Isner though who needed three tough sets to defeat Millman 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. Isner has had a couple of wins against Djokovic in Masters events so you can’t quite count him out, but judging by Djokovic’s form of late he is going to be very hard to stop. Isner has the big serve, but Djokovic’s returning has been lethal of late. In the second quarter, Ferrer will play Lu for a place in the semis.
