Just a quick post to update you on what has transpired so far in Paris. The big four with the exception of Djokovic funnily enough all looked extremely comfortable in advancing to the third round. Djokovic played yesterday and looked rusty in defeating Bellucci 7-5, 6-3. He actually dropped serve in the fifth game I think but broke back straight away the way he usually does.
He seemed to find his game toward the end of the first set when he broke Bellucci and then held serve to love to win the first set. Djokovic made an uncharacteristic number of unforced errors, but his winners still outnumbered those by 25-24. I guess the rust is to be expected and I’m sure he will be back to crushing opponents soon. He plays Simon next though who is the local favorite and can be difficult to put away.
Should be interesting. Then the rest of the big four were in action today with Murray being the first and he made short work of Coric 6-1, 6-2. I expected a tough match so all credit to Murray. I guess he means business in Paris. I can see him making at least semis. After Murray, it was the turn of Nadal who played Rosol again after the controversial match in Basel.
Rosol was up to his old attempts at psyching by tapping the ground with his racquet before Nadal served, but Nadal crushed him 6-2, 6-2. Thanks for coming. No more Mr. Nice Guy like in Basel and Nadal is going to be hard to stop here on the slow indoor courts. He next plays the winner of Anderson and Thiem who is about to start. Given that these courts are slow I am interested to see if Thiem can win another indoor match.
It will be tough against Anderson, though. Finally, Federer played against Seppi and although Seppi has been awful of late Federer was pretty terrific himself as he blasted Seppi 6-1, 6-1. Clearly the title in Basel didn’t do anything to hurt his confidence. It’s good to see him in this kind of form and hopefully we have another Djokerer final.
Federer plays Isner now and we are probably looking at a Fedray semi in the bottom half. Elsewhere in the draw Stan had a solid 6-3, 7-6(6) win over Tomic and is on course for a quarterfinal meeting with Nadal. These courts should suit Stan’s game. Incredibly, Dimitrov won two straight matches when he defeated Cilic today 7-6(3), 7-6(2). I hear he is now dating Alize Lim so maybe the beginning of something better for him.
Ps. Djokovic hasn’t lost a match indoors since 2012 and he is on an 18-match winning streak. Heading for another record-breaking streak?
