Djokovic looked particularly strong today as he swept aside Nishikori 6-1, 6-1 in his opening match in the O2. Federer wasn’t bad either with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Berdych, but Berdych was only a shadow of what he was against Djokovic in Paris.
Federer even handed him the early break when he served two consecutive double faults to drop serve to love. But Berdych tamely handed him the break back to love as well if I remember correctly.
Then at 4-4 Berdych dropped serve to love again. It was pretty pathetic from Berdych all in all who always looks out of place at the World Tour Finals. In five World Tour Finals appearances, he has only once made the semis losing in straight sets to Tsonga.
Yep, we love it too
As for Nishikori, he was simply beaten by a player who is playing tennis from another planet. Djokovic is looking in absolutely flawless form and if today’s two matches is anything to go by Djokovic will pummel Federer too.
Just unreal consistency and pressure from the Djoker. He really looks incredibly comfortable in these conditions. The courts are slow and, of course, he hasn’t lost a match at the World Tour Finals in the last three years.
If he keeps up today’s form he will win a fourth straight title in London without dropping a set along the way. There doesn’t seem to be anything spectacular about his game unless you want to call everything he does spectacular.
Djokovic chalked up a 4th year-end #1 in 5 years
The incredible thing is that Nishikori wasn’t playing badly. Djokovic just didn’t give him any gifts at all and made him look like a junior out there. I guess there are people out there who finds Djokovic’s dominance boring.
I find it the opposite. You don’t see this kind of dominance every day and who knows how long he can keep it up. I think he is on a high after that US Open final anyway and I am enjoying every second of it as a fan.
Tomorrow’s Matches
Tomorrow in the Nastase group Murray will be up against Ferrer while the second one between Stan and Nadal will be particularly interesting. Whoever wins that match will give a big boost to their chances to make the semis.
That’s a tough one to call. Stan defeated Nadal in two very tight tiebreakers in Paris and this one can go either way. I am certainly planning on watching it.
Then the schedule for Tuesday is out as well and the big one in group Smith, Federer vs Djokovic, is happening. So another blockbuster match to look forward to there. What a great week for tennis this is!
Ps. I said my piece about the Paris attacks in a comment on my last post if you were wondering. I have nothing more to add.
Djokovic’s year-end No.1
The is in your court.
